Three Winter Landscaping Ideas in One Project

Winter may feel like a slower season for landscaping, but it can be one of the most productive times to move meaningful projects forward. We recently completed a landscape installation at First Presbyterian Church in Amarillo that we love because it highlights three winter landscaping ideas in one project: pavers, planters, and outdoor lighting.

These services are available year-round, but winter is an exceptionally effective time to focus on hardscaping and lighting. While planting naturally pauses between fall and spring, structural elements and lighting improvements can move forward without interruption, allowing properties to be fully prepared for the growing season ahead.

Pavers That Support Function and Flow

Pavers play an essential role in many landscapes, particularly in commercial spaces like First Presbyterian Church. Walkways, courtyards, and gathering areas must withstand frequent foot traffic while remaining safe, level, and dependable over time. Proper installation is critical to avoid future issues such as shifting, uneven surfaces, or drainage concerns.

At First Presbyterian, the pavers help define the courtyard, create a sense of order, and complement the architecture of the building. The layout guides movement through the space while supporting both accessibility and visual balance. The result is a landscape that feels welcoming, intentional, and built to serve the needs of the property for years to come.

Pavers also contribute to the overall character of a site. Pattern, spacing, and color selection influence how a space is experienced, not just how it functions. When done well, hardscaping becomes the framework that supports every other part of the landscape.

Planters That Prepare the Space for Spring

The planters at First Presbyterian are one of our favorite details in this project. Constructed with stacked stone that complements the surrounding architecture and finished with light-colored stone caps, they add structure and definition throughout the courtyard. The materials tie the space together visually while providing the durability required for a high-traffic, commercial setting.

Even without plants installed yet, the planters contribute depth and balance to the landscape. They were intentionally installed ahead of planting season so the space is ready for spring color when conditions allow. While winter is not the time to install smaller plants or seasonal flowers, it is an ideal season to complete the groundwork that supports successful planting later on.

Projects like this serve as a reminder that landscaping does not stop in winter. Preparing planting areas now allows spring installations to move efficiently and ensures plants are placed into a landscape designed to support healthy growth.

Outdoor Lighting That Enhances Safety and Use

Outdoor lighting is another key feature of this project and one that plays a critical role during the winter months. At First Presbyterian, lighting was carefully selected and placed to highlight walkways, accent hardscape features, and improve visibility throughout the space.

Lighting is important in commercial environments where safety and accessibility are critical. Thoughtful placement helps guide visitors, reduces dark areas, and creates a more comfortable experience during evening hours.

In this project, the lighting enhances the landscape without overpowering it, supporting both function and atmosphere.

Outdoor lighting also allows the landscape to remain visually engaging even when plants are dormant. By highlighting structure and form, the space continues to feel active and inviting year-round.

Why is Winter a Smart Time to Plan?

This project is a great example of how much can be accomplished during the winter season. Hardscaping, planters, and outdoor lighting provide structure, safety, and long-term value, even when planting is temporarily on hold.

Right now, our schedule allows for more flexibility, making it a great time to begin planning new projects. Winter planning gives our team extra time for design, estimates, and craftsmanship, ensuring your project is set up for long-term success before the busy spring season begins.

If you are considering improvements to your property, winter is an excellent time to start the conversation. Planning now helps ensure your landscape is ready for planting season! Get started today.
